In the year of 2008, it will be our 22nd Anniversary for our annual Dr. King federal holiday. We have consistently held an annual freedom march and rally celebration for over 20 years. We have been noted to be the largest MLK celebration in the U.S. as it pertains to our diverse participation-attendees, and we are proud of this accolade. It has become a great concern of our Committee that our youth do not have any idea of who Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X [just to name a few] are or their contributions to our wealthy history. For this reason, we decided in the year of 2006, during the 20th Anniversary celebration, not to organize the annual freedom march. It was felt that it would have a significant impact and be of relevant importance to return to the “teach in” setting to educate and to revitalize the purpose and significance of marching. In the year 2008, by popular demand, we will resume the organizing of our annual freedom march. Further, we agreed that it is our responsibility, as the culture barriers, that we educate our youth, and not blame them for their ignorance. There is a tremendous list of extraordinary individuals that have made great sacrifices and selfless acts of service to our communities both past and present, like Dr. King, that are living pearls / unsung heroes and sheroes today!
